Condition Assessment of Pressurized Pipes (Water and Force Mains) Training
Location: City of Hayward, 24499 Soto Road, Hayward, CA
Wastewater force main failures represent much greater operational and environmental risk than gravity line failures. Nevertheless, wastewater system operators have found it difficult to take a pro-active approach to force main maintenance because accessing buried pipes is difficult and costly and the use of conventional closed-circuit television (CCTV) inspection equipment usually means the system must be shut down, requiring a bypass system.
In this workshop, Chris Ewers P.E. will cover the latest methods and technologies for inspecting ferrous and non-ferrous force mains, the cost implications of implementing a pro-active system for maintaining these critical pipelines, and practical guidance for implementing assessments. Attendees will know the tools available to get in-place, nondestructive testing condition information for your system pipelines, where it makes sense to use these tools, how much they cost, categories of condition assessment information, and when to budget and build or rebuild. Students will also get an understanding of which pipes in your system are most likely to need attention (regardless of their age), a good idea of what tools you can use, and how to get to the gold standard, an estimate of remaining service life. All of this information will make you invaluable when it comes to the big-ticket asset management of pipelines and intelligently managing your agency’s CIP.
